BUZZ – Memorandum

English lyrics

It was said to be beautiful so I dreamt of the realm of my twenties
From this day on, everyone is calling me an adult
Even though there is only one day between yesterday and today
Everything changed as if in a dream

The things I knew were all fantasies
In the end, dreams do not just magically come true

Should I try becoming a cowboy from the Far West riding a horse with a sword, a spear and a shield
Be it as a pilgrim or as a wanderer, should I try escaping from the jungle-like city
As I start my journey on the road of a new life
I open the pages of a twenty-year-old memorandum
Through my song, a bit clumsily

I’ve found what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do
Somehow I can’t seem to get rid of my doubts

The things I knew were all fantasies
In the end, dreams do not just magically come true

I will lead a herd of cows against a sandy storm through a rough landscape
I will be a torero, a Gipsy, or why not Don Quixote
I don’t want to lead a normal existence with both my feet stuck to the ground
I want to walk the road of a different life that would be only mine
As I imagine myself

Should I try becoming a cowboy from the Far West riding a horse with a sword, a spear and a shield
Be it as a pilgrim or as a wanderer, should I try escaping from the jungle-like city
I don’t want to lead a normal existence with both my feet stuck to the ground
I want to walk the road of a different life that would be only mine
As I imagine myself

Commentary

It was said to be beautiful so I dreamt of the realm of my twenties

The order of the words is not very natural in the original so I was a bit confused about this one. Moreover, the CD with the booklet containing the lyrics is at my parents’ house so I had to work with lyrics I found online and I found several versions : some say “I dreamt of the world of age 20” (literal translation, it’s the version I used for my translation), others say “at age 20, I dreamt of the world”.

Be it as a pilgrim or as a wanderer, should I try escaping from the jungle-like city

It doesn’t literally says “jungle-like city”. It actually says “the city of the jungle”. But I don’t know what that means. Any idea?

Also, this song is about a young man who uncovers all the dreams he recorded in a memorandum for the past twenty years as he’s about to enter a new phase of his life. So there are a lot of nonsensical fantasies in there. Like, cowboys do not usually wield swords and spears, right? It made this song difficult to translate…
